Candy “Candy Cane” Cupp, sweet Orange Tabby Girl, from Greenfield, Indiana, passed over the Rainbow Bridge on Friday, August 23, 2024. Candy Cane started out life as an “outdoor barn” cat when the Bingham family farm’s mama cat gave birth to two little Ginger Tabby kittens. Thinking Candy and her sibling were both male, because most orange tabby cats are male. Chelsea named the two kittens Caine and Able. Chelsea would help care for the kittens by bottle feeding them when Mama would be gone for long periods of time hunting and cleaning up the “stinky stuff” on the farm. The kitten, known as "Cain," thought it was fun to roll in anything stinky that mama cat returned with from her hunt when she brought it back home with her. Then Cain would get in trouble with Mama Cat. Days and weeks passed, and winter arrived. The family noticed that only little Cain was roaming around in the area. Chelsea’s grandma “Nanny” made the decision to bring little “Cain” inside and adopt him as her own. This kitten joined the family's house cat, Summer. Once inside, this sweet little kitten was so playful and sweet. The little kitten also turned out to be a surprise to everyone. Little Caine was a girl, which was pretty rare, since statistically, for every five ginger cats, only one will be female. Cain's name was changed to Candy Cane. Since orange tabbies are known to play more than other cat breeds, especially when they're young and are more outgoing and open to interacting with humans than other cat breeds, it didn’t take long before she became Grandma Nanny’s best friend. Candy remained in the care of Grandma Nanny until 2012, when unfortunately Grandma Nanny passed away from lung cancer. Little Candy was confused about why she couldn't find her grandma Nanny anywhere. Summer was distraught and ran away. Candy was left alone with Chelsea’s grandpa, "Pepaw." He loved Candy, and she became his companion in his sadness and loneliness. At the age of 14 years old, Candy had lost all of her upper teeth and hearing. Candy was also permanently congested. Chelsea’s dad said Candy had an infamous "Elvis sneer" or bulldog expression. Her congestion gave her her iconic little snorts. Candy lived with Grandpa "Pepaw" for nine years, providing him some much-needed comfort since losing his wife of many years. Grandpa “Pepaw” passed away in 2021, joining his beloved wife in heaven. Shortly thereafter, Chelsea moved into the home to care for Candy Cane. After the move, visiting coworkers and friends alike loved meeting Candy. Candy worked a room like no other. She soaked up all the love, attention, and good food she could. Candy also got her own slogan from it. "Everyone Loves Ms. Candy." Which wasn't wrong. Everyone who met her loved her immensely. Candy would lay on whoever was visiting and lick their skin raw, just to show she loved them. Then she'd scream for wet food and go feral on it. Candy loved to shove her face into plates. Chelsea relayed, “Who would've ever thought that would be the one thing I'd miss most?" Chelsea was with Candy throughout most of her life. From bottle-feeding her to watching her grow into the old girl who began having difficulty seeing, hearing, and breathing. Although it was incredibly difficult, Chelsea made the most selfless decision to let her go, to take her pain away and end Candy’s suffering. Chelsea stated that “In the end, this left the biggest hole in my heart. There will be no other cat like my crusty old girl." In addition to Chelsea, Candy will be mourned by her brothers and sister, cousin Scott, and everyone whose lives Candy has touched. She is sadly missed by everyone, but the family has comfort in knowing that she crossed the Rainbow Bridge, meeting wonderful Grandma Nanny and Grandpa Pepaw on the other side. Arrangements have been entrusted to Always & Furever in Our Hearts Pet Cremation in association with Liming Family Funeral Home, located in Shirley, Indiana.
