Charles Edward Haler, Sr.

Charles Edward Haler, Sr., age 86, of Cambridge City, Indiana passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on January 12, 1937 in Cambridge City, Indiana to parents Mary Louise (Brooks) and Sim Haler.

Charles was a lifelong resident of Cambridge City and attended Lincoln Middle/High School until joining the workforce as an Automotive Laborer with The Ford Motor Company. Charles worked many years until retirement. Charles enjoyed laughter and making people smile. He was always making his family laugh, at times he would laugh so hard and his family would join in laughing, not knowing what they were even laughing about. One of Charlie’s pastimes was going to Flea Markets and finding treasures. He would buy and sell items for his own booth that he had at the Flea Market. 

Charles loved the playing cards, all different types of card games. He also enjoyed a good game of horseshoes. Charles listened to good old classic country music and was musically gifted himself, being in a band, playing guitar, harmonica and providing vocals for the band. Charles was a fan of westerns, like Bonanza, The Rifleman and The Lone Ranger. He liked apple pie, strawberry ice-cream and fried chicken, only if it was the good “dark meat”. Charles was a charmer with the ladies and was known to flirt from time to time. Charles was an absolute character and his family loved him so. 

In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his love of 32 years, Alice Westin, and her children; Barb, Lennie, Anna and Roger, who Charles loved as if they were his own, siblings; William Joseph Haler, Sim Haler, Jr., Margaret Elizabeth Stockton, Evelyn Junetta Wicker, Helen Louise Taylor, Mary Lena Catherine Taylor, David Paul Haler and Marcella Jo Haler. 

Charles is survived by his children; daughters; Jennifer (Greg Hunt) Haler, of Cambridge City, Indiana, Tracey Mearse, of Cambridge City, Indiana and son, Charles (Teresa) Haler, Jr. of Spiceland, Indiana and by the mother of his children, Norma (Chubby) Haler, of Cambridge City, Indiana, grandchildren; Vanessa Mustin, Janet (Kevin) Johnson, David Haler, Kevin Haler, Beth (Joey) Suttles, Heather (Nearchan) Haroon, Alisha (Jasen) Lungren Jr., Nikki Fink and Jacque Jewel. Charles is also survived by Brenda, Billy, Kristi, Glen, Randy and Daniel, children of Alice, who, to Charles, were all his family as well. Also left to cherish his memory are siblings; Clifford Raymond Haler, of Cambridge City, Indiana, Virginia Lee York, of Cambridge City, Indiana, Laurel Lucielle Nash, of Cambridge City, Indiana, Ronald Eugene Haler, of East Germantown, Indiana, Robert Arthur Haler, of Cambridge City, Indiana, Carl Fredrick Haler, of Bluffton, Indiana, and Faith Elaine Elliott, of Connersville, Indiana. 

All who knew and loved him will sadly miss Charles and his happy laughter. Charles met with Liming Family Funeral Home a few years ago when he wanted to make his final arrangements in advance, and at his request there will be no funeral or memorial service, he preferred to be remembered with a smile.
