Cora Lee Hensley, age 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana left this world on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana and joined her beloved husband, Lonnie, in heaven. She was born February 17, 1938 in Fort Gay, West Virginia to parents Lindsey Robertson and Nona (Kits) Robertson. In addition to her husband and parents, Cora is preceded in death by her sisters; Hazel, Faye, Martha, and Eloise and brothers; David, Ernest and Burnard.
Cora married her sweetheart, Lonnie Hensley, in Fort Gay, West Virginia on November 3, 1954. They were married for 66 years until Lonnie went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 29, 2021.
Cora was about her faith and family. She very much enjoyed an outpouring of the Spirit. There are memories of hearing her in the back room praying and seeking God. Cora loved her family with all her heart and soul and was the very best “Mamaw”. She always made sure her home was a source of warmth, love and comfort to her family and always made you feel safe. When anyone was sick the first thing to do was “Go to Mamaws” and she would make everything better! She would never let you go hungry, she made sure of it! If you brought her some food she would always ask, “Do you want some?” As soon as you walked through her door (even if you just ate) you were always hungry at Mamaws. No matter how late it was or how tired she was, she would make you a grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup. A family member lovingly recalls her having cravings during pregnancy and Cora’s canned buttered corn was exactly what was needed and a big bowl would be waiting on the table when she arrived!! She made the best black raspberry jelly, it was out of this world. Cora was serious about her McDonald’s coffee and had to have it everyday, through rain, sleet or snow, it was a must! In her quiet time Cora loved working on large puzzles, she would have a table in the corner and it would take weeks to finish but she was persistent and got the job done. As soon as she finished the puzzle she would start on a brand new one moments later. Wonderful memories of Cora also include being the most fun and playful Mamaw, with memories of drinking pretend tea from a toy porcelain tea set with her 3-year-old granddaughter, playing “Balloon Volleyball” and lots of other games. If you enjoyed scary movies, the perfect place to go was Mamaws, she loved scary movies!! Her family remembers that one of the best things to do was to sneak up behind her as quietly as you could and just stand there until she turned around, she would say: “OHHH GAWWWD, YOU SCARED ME!!” and then she would smack you! She always made Sunday dinner for her family. Her Grandchildren will never forget her “meat in a bowl”. Cora loved her family with all her heart and would give them the world if she could! Though the love of her family was strong, Cora couldn’t live without her husband, Lonnie. She told her family “It won’t be long, he is waiting for me,” and just two and a half weeks after his passing, she took her eternal journey to be with him. Cora is survived by her children; son, Granvel Hensley and daughter, Karen Graham, her brother; Lindsey, Jr. and sister, Bertha Walder, grandchildren; Eric Graham, Kevin Graham, Christopher Graham, Christina Graham, Katrina Whitaker, and Anya Jewell, great-grandchildren; Blake Graham, Christian Graham and Olivia Graham. Cora is also survived by a host of other family members and friends. Cora is once again in the arms of her husband Lonnie and in her heavenly home with God but her loving and warm spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her here on earth.
