Duke Riggin of Gwynneville, Indiana, the lovable Redbone Coonhound of Don and Michelle Riggin, passed over the Rainbow Bridge on Monday, October 27, 2025.
Duke’s lucky day was on Thursday, August 15, 2013. That was the day he was rescued by the Riggin family from Indianapolis Animal Control Care Services, the largest animal rescue organization in Indianapolis.
According to the family, the one thing they loved the most about Duke was how cuddly he was. “He always wanted to be by our side; he was so sweet.“
Don shared his favorite memory of Duke. In such an amazing act of bravery—his daughter and their shepherd pup were outside, and a pitbull got loose and approached them. When Duke saw the pit bull, he bolted out of the door and chased the pit bull back to his own yard. Duke pinned the pit bull against the wall, protecting his daughter and the puppy until they were both safe.
Duke was such a sweet boy. He loved taking a bath! He would jump back in the tub even after he had just finished taking a bath. Don shared how Duke loved to bring them his brush so they could brush his fur.
Duke also enjoyed going for car rides with his family. Duke loved hanging his head out of the window, letting the fresh air blow his fur, and taking in all of the sights and smells. Duke’s family described his personality as “a lover” and “sweet and playful.”
Duke’s favorite object was his blanket that he loved to snuggle up with. Don said, “He loved being covered up.” He also would lie outside on the hot asphalt in the sun, even if it was 95 degrees outside.
Don jokingly recalled that Duke’s favorite treats were any and all treats. “He was a lover of all treats; food was his main hobby.”
Duke, who was also lovingly referred to by his family as “Dukie Duke” and “Brown Sugar Ham,” loved everyone, and everyone who met Duke loved him.
Don shared that what Duke valued the most in his life was his family. Duke was a sweet soul and deeply cared for his entire family, but he had a special bond with his human sister, Rachel.
For 12 years Duke has been a beloved part of the Riggin family. He will never be forgotten. Don stressed that Duke was his best friend. In addition to Don and Michelle, mourning the loss of Duke are his human sister, Rachel, and his fur sibling, Luna, whom Duke helped raise and showed the ropes on how to not only be a great dog but a great family member too.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Always & Furever In Our Hearts Pet Cremation in association with Liming Family Funeral Home, located in Shirley, Indiana. We are honored to serve the family of Duke Riggin.
