Lena Mae (Thompson) Bertram

Lena Mae Bertram, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at her residence in Shirley, Indiana. Earlier in the week she expressed to her son that she was “ready to go to heaven now”.  Lena was born on February 23,1929 in Albany, Kentucky to parents; Cowan and Nancy (Rigney) Thompson. Lena was one of six children and was the last surviving child of Cowan and Nancy. Lena attended Clinton County High School in Albany, Kentucky until meeting her husband Hobart Lee Bertram. Lena and Hobart owned a Sawmill and Logging Company until Hobart unexpectedly passed December 21, 1981. Lena continued to run the company several years following his passing and did everything from running the sawmill to driving the logging trucks. Lena attended the Shirley Gospel Mission Church for many years and enjoyed Christian Music with “The Old Rugged Cross” being her favorite hymn. Lena loved putting on her straw hat and going fishing and could get pretty fierce if anyone got in her fishing space. Lena enjoyed watching old western movies starring the “Duke” John Wayne. If you were lucky enough to have known Lena you may have had the chance to try Lena’s Homemade Fried Apple Pies, they were out of this world. Lena loved good old-fashioned Kentucky cooking. In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, Lena is preceded in death by her daughters; Wanda L. Bertram and Janet Faye (Bertram) Maxwell. brothers; Frank, John and Bill and sisters; Opal and Louise. Lena is survived by her son, Bill and daughter-in-law Donna Bertram of Shirley. Bill expressed his gratitude to Donna for lovingly taking care of his mother for many years. Lena is also survived by her grandchildren; Jonathon Bertram of Greenfield and Michael and Aaron Bertram of Shirley and Mathew Maxwell of Greenfield. Lena is also survived by numerous nieces nephews and cousins. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her. At Lena’s request, a private graveside service will be held at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
