Louie David Smith, age 78, of Knightstown, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence at 10:41 pm on Monday, August 11, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Louie was born on Monday, December 16, 1946, in Sumter, South Carolina, to the late Jesse and Maggie (Baker) Smith.
Louie attended Edmunds High School in Sumter, South Carolina. Following high school, he decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he earned the rank of sergeant and proudly and selflessly protected and served his country for 20 years and 11 days. Louie was quick to remind those he knew not to forget about the additional “11 days.” After retiring from his career with the US Army, Louie continued to work and became a delivery driver for Auto Value and continued working up until his retirement in 2013.
Louie enjoyed many things in his life. Louie liked to listen to classic country music artists such as Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton. His favorite television shows were Gilligan’s Island and Fox News. He loved classic western movies, especially with his favorite actor John Wayne, and enjoyed the Ernest movies. He liked classic old cars, and he enjoyed NASCAR and the Indy 500 races. Louie also liked to watch the speeding cars from his front porch get pulled over by the Knightstown Police Department.
Louie always kept his family on their toes; he liked letting off firecrackers with his hands.
When it came to food, Louie loved his Subway sandwiches and drinking an ice-cold Coke with them.
The most important thing to Louie was his family and friends. He loved them and they adored him. Louie was a longtime roommate of his friend, Carla Purvis. Carla’s children referred to Louie as “Uncle Lou Dog.” Louie stepped up and became a father figure to Carla’s children, and as the children grew into adulthood and had their children, he happily took on the role of grandfather. He took the role of father and grandfather very seriously, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family. According to his family, "He made sure they had everything they could ask for, even if they were being roody poots.”
As Louie grew older, his son Alexander Bolton made the decision to relocate to the small town of Knightstown and move Louie in with him and his family. This move gave Louie a safe place to walk around. Louie never met a stranger; he would speak with anyone he met and made many friends. He was able to enjoy his life at the small-town pace. Louie was grateful to be able to live with Alexander and his daughter-in-law Kaetlyn. Kaetlyn stepped in and took wonderful care of Louie as his health deteriorated and continued to care for him until he took his last breath. According to Louie’s family,
“Louie loved all his grandkids equally, but his firstborn-grandson was special; Louie would ‘sneak’ to the store and buy ‘his boy’ anything and everything.”
In addition to Carla, Alexander, and Kaetlyn, also mourning the loss of Louie are his children, Ema Evans (Lorenzo Sevilla), Russ (Jasmine) Bolton, and Liliana; grandchildren Isaias, Joscelin, Idalia, Justice, Eliezer, and Cataleya; and his very close fellow veteran friends Keith Johnson and Yvonne Couch, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He is also survived by Brutus the dog, whom he absolutely loved, or as he referred to him, his “little knot-head.”
Louie was preceded in death by his mother, father, and siblings.
Louie will be always loved, never forgotten, and forever missed by every life he touched.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Evangel Church located at 1221 East Main Street, Greenfield, Indiana, 46140, with funeral services to follow.
