Pippin Kuhn Obituary

Pippin Kuhn of Greenfield, Indiana, the 13-year-old beautiful tabby fur baby of Kylie and Justin Kuhn, passed over the Rainbow Bridge in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 17, 2024.

Pippin was one of many little kittens who find themselves as residents at a local animal shelter. Fortunately for this particular kitten, Monday, September 19, 2011 was a life-changing day. Kylie walked into the Floyd County Animal Shelter in New Albany, Indiana, and this cute little one won Kylie’s heart and found a forever home.

Justin shared how this sweet girl came to be known as "Pippin." Kylie chose Pippin’s name from one of her favorite books. Pippin was named after the character Peregrin Took, commonly known simply as Pippin, a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings, whose character is known as “the Hobbit who is always on the lookout for a good meal, known for his good nature, cheerfulness, and quick wit.” She chose this name specifically because, at four months old, this kitten's favorite thing was food, and her favorite activity was eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Pippin was very young when Kylie adopted her, and the animal shelter was unable to determine if Pippin was a male or a female, but as time passed, it was discovered that Pippin was in fact a girl. A very hungry little girl. Kylie recalled a favorite memory of Pippin was when she was talking to Justin on the phone prior to their marriage. Pippin was walking on the dining room table. She said, "What a majestic creature,” and not even two seconds later, Pippin “slipped on one of the placemats and tumbled off the table like a clutz,” recalling, “I laughed so hard, then had to explain to Justin what happened.” As Pippin became more accustomed to her new surroundings and more relaxed in her new home, her true personality began to develop. Once she realized that she had a family she could trust and depend on and she no longer needed to worry about where and when her next meal was coming from, she became somewhat of a more selective eater. Even though Pippin started out her life as an eager eater, Pippin became very particular about her food and would only eat her specific brand of dry cat food. Pippin didn’t really care to eat any type of treat at all, but on a rare occasion she would sneak a bite of the puppy’s kibble. Even though Pippin was small in stature, she had quite the personality. She was really laid back and calm. She had bright, green, inquisitive eyes and a cheerful demeanor.

Pippin did not like traveling at all. Pippin was content sitting on the window ledge, gazing out of the window every chance she could. At times, Pippin could be a bit elusive. She liked being on her own and spent her time hiding out under Kylie and Justin’s bed or sleeping in a secluded place. She would come out and socialize on her terms; she would usually come out late at night after the little ones were tucked into bed. Pippin enjoyed playing with her dangling toys, her string, and feathery toys on a stick. Kylie relayed, “Her favorite toy was a green wand with a string and feathery toy on the end that looked like a fishing lure. She would leap in the air, chasing after it.” Pippin would make Kylie laugh at the silly way she liked to lay on chair tops or armrests with her front paws draped on either side, dangling. Something Pippin loved was having her fur brushed by Kylie. Pippin trusted Kylie more than anything in this world, but Pippin was extremely cautious about trusting others. It took many years for Pippin to trust Justin and truly warm up to him. Pippin was Kylie’s girl from day one. Kylie rescued Pippin, and Pippin never forgot the person who taught her what it felt like to be loved. Kylie jokingly relayed that what Pippin valued most in life was “food and snuggles with me, exclusively in that order." Pippin will always be lovingly remembered by Kylie and Justin, by her human siblings, Desmond and Andrew, who she eventually let pet her, and by her puppy sister, Tauriel, who, according to Kylie, she secretly liked but didn’t want to admit it.
