Ruby Hernandez Obituary

Ruby Hernandez of New Palestine, Indiana, the beloved 16-year-old Terrier Mix girl of Andrea “Andi” and Pablo Hernandez, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Ruby was born in August of 2008 in Monterrey, Mexico. This little pup was left roaming the streets until she found her forever home in January of 2009 when she was rescued by Andi and Pablo Hernandez. Andi shared her favorite memory of Ruby: “Ruby was a little puppy wandering the streets of Mexico when we were down visiting family. She followed my son Abe around, and he built her a little "dog house" out of bricks and a car floor mat. We talked our aunt into keeping her and then took Ruby to the vet to get her vaccinated and pay for a spay. When the vet told us she was young enough to legally come home with us, we harassed Pablo into letting us bring her home. She traveled 1475 miles to Indiana, where she lived the rest of her life but still enjoyed traveling often.” Ruby was inquisitive and smart; she liked to explore. According to Andi, she had “way more street smarts” than her siblings. Andi shared a favorite memory of how Ruby loved playing the game “Chase,” relaying, “Ruby liked to run, and she was fast. She once got away from us, and we chased her until we ran out of steam; then we got in the car to try and catch her. She still wouldn't stop as the game was just too fun! I was in a full panic as we were making laps through our neighborhood. We were throwing hotdogs at her, and they bounced off her head, as she had zero interest in food. Other neighborhood dogs were coming behind her to get the hotdogs. It was crazy! Finally, she stopped for some pets from some neighborhood kids, and we were able to catch her. She could be very naughty! We later learned that all you had to do was run in the opposite direction, and she would chase you. That made things way easier later down the road!” Ruby and Abe grew up together, and they had a special bond. Ruby was just a little runt shadowing Abe through the streets of Mexico, and he showed her what it felt like to be treated with kindness and love. From that moment on, Ruby was always by Abe's side. Ruby didn't mind bath time so much, but she hated going to the groomers. Andi would let Ruby’s fur grow, postponing the trip as long as she could, and then take Ruby to get one “big haircut.” Andi jokingly relayed, “Eventually I bought an at-home vacuum/clipper, and she seemed to enjoy the comfort of an amateur groom at home. But she would put up a good fight to keep you from wiping her eye boogers or clipping her nails!” Ruby loved munching on crunchy dog biscuits. She also loved tamales, but Andi explained, “Since she ate one and got pancreatitis, it was a dish she would have to miss the rest of her days!” Ruby enjoyed curling up on a nice rug to catch a little nap in front of the fireplace. Ruby loved going on car rides and vacations with her family. She enjoyed going anywhere, as long as she was with her family. Andi shared sweet memories of when they visited the many state parks in Indiana and Kentucky with Ruby and her sisters and how they even took Ruby on a beach vacation to Florida after she recovered from her illness four years ago. Ruby, whose family also lovingly referred to her by her nickname “Bonita Rubita,” was a sweet little old girl who was described by her family as being “the good friend,” “a welcoming ambassador,” and also the girl who was always “down for a good time.” The Hernandez family are heartbroken by the loss of their sweet Ruby but they take comfort knowing that she was greeted by both of her sisters, Zsa Zsa and Eva, who were waiting for her on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge to joyfully welcome her since preceded her in death. Ruby and her joyous spirit will never be forgotten. In addition to Andi and Pablo, mourning the loss of Ruby are her human siblings, Anthony and Abe (Chelsea), her 21-year-old cat brother Tito, who she adored, and her younger dog sisters Minnie and Cookie. Ruby also had her niece and nephew's dogs, Vega, Copper, and Jameson (Jimmy Tots). Arrangements have been entrusted to Always & Furever In Our Hearts Pet Cremation in association with Liming Family Funeral Home, located in Shirley, Indiana. We are honored to serve the family of Ruby Hernandez.
