Salem Craven, a handsome 14-year-old fur baby of Jessica Craven from Connersville, Indiana, passed over the rainbow bridge on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Born in September 2011 in Lacey, Washington, Salem became part of the Craven family in 2013 when Jessica adopted him after friends sought a loving home for him.
As a military cat, Salem lived in several places throughout his life, including Lacey, Washington; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Concord and Greensboro, North Carolina. Despite his many moves, Jessica stated that “he was never a fan of car trips. Salem was happiest at home and spent his days as a devoted indoor cat.”
Jessica described Salem as “a very talkative and loving cat” whose personality filled every corner of the home. He was never shy about asking for attention, greeting his family with loud meows whenever he thought a meal or snack might be coming his way. Salem also had a mischievous streak and was known for helping himself to treats whenever the opportunity arose. Over the years, he managed to tear open bags of popcorn and even sneak pepperoni from unattended pizza.
Salem truly ruled the household. He loved to cuddle on his human and would paw at blankets to let her know exactly how comfortable he wanted to be. He also had a goofy side that made his family smile, often burying his face in Jessica’s hair to sniff while kneading contentedly. When he wasn’t curled up with his family or enjoying a meal, Salem could usually be found basking in a patch of sunlight near a window, perfectly content and at peace.
Jessica shared what she loved most about Salem: "Salem's affectionate nature and love of cuddling.”
Jessica recalled her favorite memories of her time with Salem. “My favorite memories are the times we spent cuddled up together while relaxing, gaming, or sleeping,” she recalled. “He would lie on my chest, wrap himself around my neck, or sleep beside me under a blanket.” His constant companionship and love of cuddling made those moments especially meaningful.
Like most cats, Salem was not a fan of getting a bath. Jessica shared, “Salem was happy to be pampered on his own terms. He enjoyed being brushed, provided his belly was left alone, but he made his feelings about baths abundantly clear.”
Jessica felt what Salem valued the most in life was "food, sunlight, and cuddles and pets.”
Jessica shared Salem “loved his wet food and any treat he could get. He often feasted on squeeze-up or lickable treats. You couldn't walk near the kitchen without Salem following fast and meowing to get a snack.”
According to Jessica, Salem didn’t officially have any nicknames but was often lovingly referred to as "Fatty" and “Sweet Boy” because he loved talking up a storm for food and cuddling. In his prime he was over 20 pounds.
Jessica shared that his favorite toy was his “carrot kicker toy filled with catnip.”
Salem had a mischievous sense of humor and a talent for keeping his owner and guests on their toes. He was known for finding the most unexpected hiding places and remaining perfectly silent, often convincing his owner that he had somehow slipped outside. As an all-black cat, he also enjoyed peeking around doorways at night, startling his human from time to time, or stretching out in dark walkways where he was nearly stepped on. In the kitchen, Salem could always be found underfoot, loudly announcing his desire for snacks and skillfully turning every trip to the refrigerator into an obstacle course. Though his antics occasionally caused a moment of panic, they were part of the charm that made him so deeply loved and unforgettable.
Salem was loving toward his entire family, but Salem was attached to his owner Jessica above all else. Salem in turn was loved so very much and will be missed tremendously.
Salem was greeted crossing the Rainbow Bridge by his cat brothers, Teddy and Cartman, and his dog brother, Sampson, who preceded him in death.
In addition to Jessica mourning the loss of Salem, is his fur dog sibling Apollo, his human sibling Derek and grandfather Delbert, and close friends, human Blake and dogs Alice and Mary.
