Selene Brkljacic, the beloved four-year-old furbaby skunk of Nate Brkljacic of New Palestine, Indiana, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:00 PM. Nate adopted Selene on June 20, 2020, at the age of six weeks old, from Lost River Exotics in Southern Indiana.
Nate shared that he chose the name Selene because Selene in Greek mythology was the titan goddess of the moon, and Selene was, of course, a nocturnal girl.
When asked about Selene’s personality, Nate described it as “definitely unique. I always said she had an alter ego I called 'Serenity,' which was far from the truth when she set her mind to something. She'd make it happen. A very determined skunk."
What Nate loved the most about Selene was her cuddles. According to him, “She had a favorite rock she liked to play with when she was little.” Additionally, Selene's favorite snack was ricotta cheese mixed with a little cottage cheese.
Selene loved riding in the car or work truck alongside Nate. Nate relayed that when Selene was little, she did not like any type of grooming or bathing, but that changed as she grew older. He shared, “She didn't care for bath time when she was little, but she grew to love baths. I have a big walk-in shower. She loved running and playing in the water. She loved being groomed.”
Nate shared that his favorite memory of Selene was “she used to go to work with me every day and ride in the truck with me," continuing, “she was always ready for an adventure. She loved going with me on rides anywhere.”
Selene, who was nicknamed ”Skunky Girl” and “Skunk Breath," was a funny, lovable girl. What she valued the most in his life was "mealtime and just lying around cuddling.”
Nate was Selene’s person for sure. Nate shared, ”I got her when she was a little baby, and we spent a lot of time together. She was territorial of me as her dad. She didn't like other people touching me when I had her. Every interaction with her was unique; you never knew what you were going to get into.” Selene’s time with Nate and her family was not long enough; she was loved so very much and will be deeply missed by the entire Brkljacic family, who will cherish the memories of her happy, funny, furry life. In addition to her human dad Nate, Selene will be sadly missed by her human family, Susan, Lauren, Cole, Owen, Katrina, and Nathan, and her fur family: cats Luna, Binx, Vader, Milo, and Mocha and dog Buddy.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Always & Furever in Our Hearts Pet Cremation in association with Liming Family Funeral Home, located in Shirley, Indiana. We are honored to serve the family of Selene Brkljacic.
