Sophie Massie of Greenfield, Indiana, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Sophie was born in November of 2012 in Loogootee, Indiana. Lonna adopted this beautiful baby girl the following January. Sophie had such a loving personality. She brought so much joy and happiness to her new home. Lonna shared that what she loved most about Sophie was that she could sense when she was sad, and she would always come to calm her down. She would lie with her and hold her when she was crying or upset. Sophie did the same thing with her sons. She described Sophie as the “smartest, calmest, and sweetest girl you could have, so well-behaved.” Lonna continued describing her personality as “smart, calm, protective, loving, and a leader, but also “a food thief.”
One of Sophie’s favorite things to do was to go on car rides with Lonna. She went everywhere with her and absolutely loved it; whether it was to run errands or just go on a drive, Sophie was always right there by her side.
Lonna shared a couple of her favorite memories of Sophie, how she would take a dip in her mom’s pool by just walking in it “because she was so hot” and would decide to go for a swim. Also how Sophie would run up to greet her, howling every day as she walked through the door because she missed seeing her all day.
Sophie enjoyed being groomed. She actually liked taking a bath. It would take longer than most dogs because of how thick her fur was. Sophie would always shake as soon as Lonna would get her covered in soap, then she would get Lonna and the entire bathroom soaking wet. Then Lonna would have to start the whole process all over again. Sophie also loved being brushed, but she hated to have her nails touched.
Sophie didn't have a particular treat that she liked; what she did like was her family’s food. Anything they were eating is what she wanted to eat also.
Lonna shared one of her fondest memories of Sophie: “When I got her and she was around 6 months old, we put her on a pool floaty.” Lonna relayed how she just walked back and forth on it inside the pool, “Then at 7 months, that's when she started swimming.”
Lonna shared how Sophie was her baby before she actually had her human babies. She went everywhere with her and absolutely loved it. To run errands or just go on a drive, Sophie was right there by her side.
Sophie was Lonna's girl; wherever Lonna was is where you would find Sophie. After Lonna had her two sons, Sophie became very loving and protective of them as well. Lonna relayed that when she was pregnant, Sophie would lay on her stomach. After they were born, she would always be right by their side; whether they were on their blanket on the floor, in the baby swing, or in their high chair, she was always with them.
Lonna was Sophie’s person; she adored Lonna. Sophie had a big, loving heart and brought happiness and joy to the Massie family for nearly 12 years.
Lonna felt what Sophie valued most in her life was “her peace in life and the love she had.”
Sophie, or as her family often referred to her, "Mommas, “Soph,” “baby,” “baby girl,” and “beautiful,” will forever remain in her family's hearts and memories.
In addition to Lonna, mourning the loss of Sophie are her human siblings, Hayson and Sylas. Sophie was greeted on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge by her cat sibling, Spazz, who preceded Sophie in death on February 2, 2025.
